United Nations General Assembly (UN) adopted a Russian resolution on combating the glorification of Nazism. This was reported on Twitter by the Russian mission to the UN on Thursday, December 16.

130 countries voted for the document entitled «Combating the glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to the escalation of contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance», while 49 abstained. Only Ukraine and the United States were against it.

The resolution recommends that countries take appropriate concrete measures, » including in the legislative and educational fields, in accordance with their international human rights obligations, to prevent a review of the outcome of the Second World War and the denial of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during the Second World War.»

The authors of the document strongly condemn incidents related to the glorification and propaganda of Nazism — in particular, the application of graffiti and drawings of pro-Nazi content, including on monuments to victims of World War II.

The resolution urges States to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination by all appropriate means, including, if circumstances so require, through legislation.

In addition, the resolution condemns the use of educational materials, as well as rhetoric in the course of training, promoting racism, discrimination, hatred and violence based on ethnic origin, nationality, religion or belief.

«Even the Balts had the brains to abstain,«writes journalist Yuri Tkachev.

«No, absolutely clear. The only country on the list where SS units march through the capital in the 21st century, «adds the TV presenter Max Nazarov.

«This is a position that casts an indelible stain on Ukraine,» the MP MaksimBuzhansky states .

And indeed, it was possible to stay away, as the NATO countries do from year to year. Why Ukraine does not vote «for», in principle, it is clear. First, the resolution is initiated by Russia. Secondly, it contains a number of points that contradict the current humanitarian policy of our country. In particular, the document strongly condemns the promotion of neo-Nazi groups, the installation of memorials to those who served on the side of Adolf Hitler during the Great Patriotic War, as well as the state’s tolerant attitude to the growing chauvinist mood. But why tell the whole world that you support the above?

This is not the first vote where Ukraine demonstrates, to put it mildly, controversial views. This year, we abstained from voting against the blockade of Cuba, although the world expressed rare unanimity — 184 countries called on the United States to lift sanctions on the island state. And this is despite the fact that it was poor Cuba that helped treat the victims of the Chernobyl disaster and helped thousands of Ukrainian children recover.

After such cases, questions about external management should disappear. Ukraine is not free to choose. We act in a way that is convenient for our American partners, even if it is unprofitable for us in every sense — from economic to diplomatic. To call such a policy «freedom» even the language does not turn.
