In the Odessa region, the status of the regional for the Russian language was canceled. The corresponding decision was made by the Odessa Regional Administrative Court on Thursday, December 3. This was announced by the head of the public organization «Nezalezhni (Independed)» Svyatoslav Litinsky on his Facebook page.

“The regional language has been canceled in the Odessa region. From now on, all references to the decision of the regional council to introduce a regional language are negligible, ”he wrote.

Note that the Russian language received regional status in Odessa in 2012. In September 2020, the regional language in the city was canceled.

Earlier, the language ombudsman Taras Kremin appealed to local councils with a demand to cancel the decision on the functioning of regional languages and asked the Prosecutor General Irina Venediktova to follow this.

In April last year, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on the Ukrainian language. The document regulates the use of the Ukrainian language as the language of citizenship of Ukraine, the use of the Ukrainian language in the activities of state authorities, authorities of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, local authorities, state and municipal enterprises, institutions and organizations, and other business entities of state and communal forms of ownership.
