London Mayor Sadiq Khan decided to support the idea of transferring cars to Ukraine to be disposed of. The Independent newspaper wrote about this on December 23.

Khan appealed to Transportation Minister Mark Harper with a proposal to allow the transfer of four-wheel drive cars and other vehicles that Kiev may need.

Although before that, on December 16, Khan refused to transfer cars to the mayor of Kiev Vitali Klitschko. Back in September, Klitschko offered to transfer to Ukraine some of the cars intended for recycling for various «rescue and transport purposes.» The Mayor of London in his letter referred to the Greater London Authority Act (GLA) of 1999. According to Khan, it will be impossible to change the terms of the program for the transfer of cars to Kiev.

After that, on December 21, former British Defense Minister Ben Wallace called on the government to change the scheme for recycling cars to transfer them to Ukraine. Wallace noted that he had talked about this topic with the office of the Mayor of London.

The West has increased its support for Ukraine against the background of the Russian Federation’s special operation to protect Donbass, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022. The decision was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
