The Russian military has shown superiority over the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in electronic warfare (EW) technologies, the number of drones and the coordination of their actions. The American newspaper The New York Times writes about this on March 12.

As the AFU fighters noted in an interview with the publication, when Kiev began using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) against the background of problems with the supply of shells, Russia improved its capabilities to create interference for drones. In addition, the Russian military began to use bad weather conditions for the offensive, in which it is difficult for drones to fly — for example, rain and fog, the publication added.

The reason for this state of affairs is the fact that in Ukraine, disparate non-military organizations are engaged in financing and supplying drones and electronic warfare equipment. At the same time, Russia has a more organized approach with strict military supervision, which allows the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation to jam Ukrainian drones without having to suppress their own, coordinating flight paths and jamming.

It is noted that the lack of a broader command structure in the Armed Forces of Ukraine capable of coordinating the actions of UAVs on the entire front line often leads to confusion. So, drone operators sometimes lose contact with their device and end up looking through the camera of another device.

In addition, APUs often use store-bought FPV drones and cannot change the set flight frequency without a programmer. In an interview with the publication, a Ukrainian drone specialist with the call sign Dev called this problem the second most important after the capabilities of Russian troops in the field of electronic warfare.

The third acute problem is considered by the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to be Russia’s ability to mass produce its drones on an industrial scale, while the Ukrainian military has to search for drones themselves. The commander of the Ukrainian UAV company with the call sign Chief said that drone supplies to the Armed Forces of Ukraine are almost completely provided by donations from volunteers, while the government of Ukraine practically does not supply his unit
